We have some exciting news for retro racing fans! This week, Atari revealed its Fatal Run revival, Fatal Run 2089! 

The original Fatal Run came out in 1990 and was a worldwide hit. It featured post-apocalyptic vehicular combat as you drove an anti-radiation vaccine through the wasteland. The original Fatal Run for 2600 was the largest and last title for the system, with 32 levels and 32kB of data. Each level had a password, which once you got it, meant you could return to that level in a sort of save system before game saves were truly developed. 

Reviews for the original Fatal Run were enthusiastic about the gameplay, but neutral about the graphics. Those complaints were certainly blown out of the water by the trailer for Fatal Run 2089. Coming from arcade pixel graphics, the game is now fully rendered in slick 3D. It’s dark and gritty, giving a mix of Doom and Mad Max. Towering skyscrapers crash around you as you drive through laser fields and blast other cars off of the road. Fatal Run 2089 has lost none of its soul and transformed into a game modern and retro gamers alike will go crazy for. 

Big Swing For A First Game

Atari Interactive partnered with MNSTR Studio to develop Fatal Run 2089. MNSTR Studio is an independent company that collaborates with video game companies to provide full development production and high-quality art. This passionate team values their coworkers, their partners in the industry, and excellence in their work. Moreover, MNSTR Studios specializes in just the kind of grungy tech and sci-fi aesthetics Fatal Run 2089 needed. Although this is their first game, MNSTR Studio has several in the pipeline that have yet to be announced. Keep an eye out for MNSTR Studios in the future, and look forward to their future titles!

Fatal Run 2089 will be released on PC and console in 2025. While there is no official store for the game as it is still in early development and there’s no suggested price yet, you can find out more about Fatal Run 2089 on its official page on the Atari website.
