Ready to spread your wings and fly high? Atari is unleashing an unimaginable sequel to their 1981 game Yars’ Revenge in collaboration with WayForward Technologies. Yars Rising, the cyberpunk action platformer, is coming to PC and consoles worldwide on September 10th!

The Return of a Classic

The original Yars’ Revenge was released for the Atari 2600 and Game Boy Color. In it, you were a member of the insectoid race of Yars attacking their arch-rivals, the Qotile. The Qotile had destroyed the habitable planets in the Yars’ solar system, so the Yars are retaliating with their unfinished planetary defense system, now turned into the offensive Zorlon Cannon. Most of the plot was unveiled in a comic that was released alongside the game in May of 1982.

Yars’ Revenge got remakes in Yar’s Revenge (2011), a 3D rail shooter, and Yars: Recharged (2022), a 2D twin stick shooter. Both games recounted the events in the original Yars’ Revenge, but with updated graphics and playstyles. They also introduced the concept of the Yars being humanoid, rather than just beefed-up alien house flies. Yars Rising now takes that concept one step further.

The Yars universe goes anime in Yars Rising, with a gorgeous, fully developed world and an absolute banger of a soundtrack. Play as young hacker Emi Kimura, who is hired by a mysterious patron to infiltrate QoTech Corps. Unravel the dark truth of the men behind QoTech and Emi’s own intrastellar origins as you traverse the Metroidvania maze of QoTech’s headquarters.

In addition to completely new gameplay, focused on stealth and platforming until Emi’s powers are awakened, Yars Rising features a fun nod to the original game through its hacking challenges. Play levels of the first Yars’ Revenge to break past cybersecurity and gain DNA access. Yars’ Revenge is also available from the main menu, so you can enjoy it at any time.
