Review: Drive into the Crazy World of WHAT THE CAR?

Triband, the studio that brought us WHAT THE GOLF?, shows us another crazy fun world in their newest release, WHAT THE CAR? In this action-adventure game, you play as a cartoon car, traveling through different levels and recusing bears locked in chests. With a fun concept and engaging gameplay, this game is a blast for any age.

First Impressions

The first noticeable thing about WHAT THE CAR? is Triband’s signature cartoon art style. This game truly embraces the simple style that adds to its quirkiness. The color palette and character designs are both charming and endearing. Each stage is meticulously crafted to reflect a distinct theme, immersing players in a colorful and playful world. The art style effectively captures the lighthearted essence of the game, making it a visually captivating experience from start to finish. Each item on the screen fits into the visuals of the game without feeling out of place.

The Humor to Match

Part of the brilliance of WHAT THE CAR? is its humor throughout the game. From racing on a Roomba to surfing on the ocean, there are very few places that this game will not let go. Starting the game with a simple introduction, you simply just drive, or walk, your car to the finish line. As you explore more of the levels, things start to get more unique.

Racing to the finish line can change from simply driving to it to little mini games like chopping vegetables or making burgers at a diner. Each level provides you with a little surprise as to the unique way of getting to the finish line is.

Simple but Fun Gameplay

WHAT THE CAR?‘s controls are very simple. Players can steer the car through various terrains, perform jumps, and avoid objects. While there are bears, buildings and other objects that could get in your way, hitting them or driving over them won’t do much but slow you down for a moment. The controls consist of simply moving forward and pressing one other button to get the car to use the gas. You might think that it could get a little boring. However, with the unique levels that change throughout each stage and mini games that match the theme of the stage, there is enough to keep you engaged to the end.

More Fun to Collect

WHAT THE CAR? provides the player with collectibles to look for in each level. Each level conceals hidden cards waiting to be discovered. Your ability to complete each level in a specific time period changes the type of card you receive once you cross the finish line, going from gold to silver, and bronze cards. This opportunity to look for hidden collectibles opens up even more enjoyment for any player who wants to 100% the game.

Another cool thing to keep an eye out for as you play are the awesome golden trophies scattered throughout each level. Once you finish the main path needed to complete the episode, there will be other paths to follow that lead to a chest with gold trophies based on the theme for that episode.

Player Created Levels

After the fun of collecting and finishing all pre-designed levels, WHAT THE CAR? provides the player with the chance to get their hands dirty and make their own levels that other players can play. Players can use their creativity and design challenges, choosing how you want your car to play during the level. Once a custom level is created, players can share their creations with the community. This not only extends the game’s replay value but also creates an engaging community eager to try out new, imaginative creations.
