If you enjoy casual platformers that test your reflexes, then you might want to try Cherry Jump. We played the demo during Steam’s Next Fest, and this seemingly simple arcade runner hides some interesting challenges.
Multiple Ways to Play
Cherry Jump by Heinrich Venter is an engaging 2D platformer that invites players to race through vibrant levels while collecting cherries and striving for the fastest completion times. Set in a captivating pixel world, the game offers multiple paths, unlockable achievements, and a variety of characters to discover. In the full game you will explore 32 unique levels that showcase the game’s imaginative design and pixel graphics. Players can choose from four distinct characters, each equipped with their own special abilities, and compete on a local time trial leaderboard.
The beautifully crafted 2D environments provide a playground for players to race through, as they gather cherries while aiming for the quickest finish. Torches on the walls provide dynamic lighting, and limited double jumps. Using those double jumps extinguish the light and darken that area of the level. There are also breakable boxes with different tolerances. You can only touch them so many times before they crumble beneath you, closing off certain routes if you fall. With various paths leading to the goal, you will find opportunities to experiment with different strategies.

Different Heroes, Different Powers
The Cherry Jump demo is limited to 8 levels and one character, but the one they chose is arguably the most balanced. Cherry Blossom is the classic protagonist, offering both speed and agility. This makes her ideal for both newcomers and experienced players, and perfect for the demo. I found her controls to be a little floaty at times, which was great for making long jumps between platforms, but difficult to stabilize on the landing. I have a bad habit of panicking and overshooting the platform to start with, and sometimes all it took was a light tap to make Cherry Blossom run off the edge. In the hands of a veteran platformer, however, she’s quite versatile!
There are three other characters you’ll be able to unlock in Cherry Jump’s full release. Hop-Along, a frog-themed character known for his wall-climbing prowess, can stick to vertical surfaces. He’ll create new pathways and strategic options for navigating tricky challenges. Then there’s the blue Blink, the shortcut master. He uses his teleportation ability to zip through obstacles, making him a favorite among speedrunners aiming to improve their best times. Lastly, the masked Candlewick adds a fiery twist to the game. His ability to bounce off torches to launch himself into the air means he’ll reach new heights and uncover hidden areas.

Such a Bop
On a final note, the music is certainly a high one. The soundscape is fantastic, filled with synths and a techno beat that just makes you want to dance. It’s very hard to get frustrated with such fun, uplifting melodies playing in the background. I certainly hope Venter puts out a soundtrack DLC with the full release, because I would happily listen to it on the daily.
Cherry Jump gets its full release on November 27th, so make sure to Wishlist it if you want to keep up with development updates. And in the meantime, I highly recommend checking out the demo and seeing what else you can discover.
