I was not prepared for Mini Mini Golf Golf, but I am intrigued. When I picked up the demo during October’s Steam Next Fest, I was looking forward to a synth wave-style mini golf arcade adventure with a story rich narrative woven throughout. What I found was a narrative experience with a thought-provoking story told by simply playing the game. It’s an intriguing look at identity and humanity’s resilience in the face of challenges.

Picture This
The world is barreling towards total climate collapse with no solution in sight. Your job is to make your way through various rifts in spacetime in search of a solution. It’s an impossible task, yet somehow you find one. The solution? Manipulation of tectonic plates, and you’ve managed to open communication with the entity responsible for this somewhere in the future.

While this entity could possess the answers to your time’s climate crisis, your communication is fragmented. It’s almost as if you can’t reach a part of them, so you maintain connection through something you both understand, mini golf. As you play, you’ll learn more about this entity.
It Didn’t Land At First
I wasn’t completely sold at first, but Mini Mini Golf Golf piqued my curiosity. I wanted to know more about the entity on the other side of the rift. The demo gives us a glimpse at their young life and how their family shaped them. The unique blend of vaporwave aesthetics mixed with abstract storytelling keeps the game interesting, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes for the full release.
Final Thoughts
Mini Mini Golf Golf is not a game about mini golf, it’s a game about connection, and how modern problems are simply people problems. That maybe we’re not removed by time, but simply removed from each other. Or at least that is the vibe I got from the demo, but in a way that is the beauty with abstract storytelling. The meaning is what you make of it.
While the game isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, if you’re into the melancholy sci-fi aesthetic and abstract narratives then this is the game for you.
Developer Three More Years is bringing Mini Mini Golf Golf to Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux on November 28, 2024.
