What happens when you combine the survival horror mechanics of games like SCP Containment Breach with the dungeon crawler elements of Legend of Grimrock? You get LURKS WITHIN WALLS, the upcoming title from developer Here Be Monsters, in partnership with publisher 2 Wedges. It may not have a release date just yet, but we were able to get our hands on the demo during the Steam Next Fest and it was a hauntingly unique breath of fresh air.
You’re Finally Awake
The demo throws us into a hospital overrun by people infected with a bizarre plague resulting in horrific mutations and uncontrollable aggressive behavior. Delve into the darkened halls, guided by sparse flickering lights and the growing hum of something. Something that is just behind the barricaded hallways and locked doorways. The only way out is deeper into the bowels of this overran hospital.

The game is beautifully designed, both in sound and environment. I especially loved the way the ambient sounds and props are used to tell a story. From the moment you’re dropped into the world it gives you a sense of impending danger long before you encounter your first enemy. Maybe it is the narrow field of view with shadowy peripherals, or the glitchy film grain that imparts this feeling of dread, but whatever it is, it works.
The atmosphere lends perfectly to the amazing character designs from iconic horror artist Trevor Henderson. I still remember the first time I turned a corner to see the terrifyingly unmoving figure looming just out of reach. Thankfully, this horrifying encounter also reminded me that the combat in this game is turn based, otherwise I would have probably quit in fear right there.
The Meat Orb Giveth & Taketh
Being a turn-based dungeon crawler puts a lot of emphasis on exploration. By exploring you not only find a way out, but also helpful resources such as healing items and weapons to protect yourself. Guns need ammo, and hitting something in the face with a crowbar is far more effective than hitting it with your fists. So, make sure to look in every corner for new ways to survive.

Or don’t. In this world of mutated plague creatures you’ll have the chance to pick up a few genetic mutations yourself. Razor sharp claws never run out of ammo. And what better way to defend yourself than with the weapons the ominous, branching meat orb bestows upon you? I’m sure there is absolutely no way giving into the sickness could possibly go wrong.
LURKS WITHIN WALLS uses a grid-based movement system reminiscent of old school dungeon crawlers like the aforementioned Legend of Grimrock. You move one square at a time, giving it a distinct, methodical sense of progression. I wasn’t sure about this decision at first, but it gels well with the turn-based aspect of the game. You feel in control of your situation, which is important in a game where any decision could be your last.
Final Thoughts
LURKS WITHIN WALLS is a dark dungeon crawler where your choices matter. With less emphasis on cheap, jump scares in favor of the intriguing story woven throughout the many rooms and encounters within the game. The demo was an intense journey from start to finish. And I can’t wait to see what other terrifying environments we get to explore in the finished game.
LURKS WITHIN WALLS is sure to be an instant hit with atmospheric and psychological horror fans if the full release can deliver an overarching narrative as powerful as the visuals.
