If you’re a fan of point-and-click games like me, you might have played Syberia more than a few times since its 2002 release. Whether you haven’t played it before or are looking for an excuse to replay, you’re in luck! Microids has recently announced that Syberia is getting a remaster, and best of all, it’s coming out later this year!
Additionally, it was also announced that Syberia would be coming to VR via the Meta Quest 3. Virtuallyz Gaming will be pairing up with Microids Studio Paris to work on the VR edition.
The founder of Microids, Elliot Grassiano had this to say about the remaster: “Syberia is much more than a game – it’s an initiatory journey, an unforgettable sensory and emotional experience. With this remaster, we want a new generation to rediscover this adventure, while offering historical fans a sublimated version respectful of Benoît Sokal’s legacy.”
Benoît Sokal And Syberia

Even though Microids developed the Syberia series, the one who truly created it was the late Benoît Sokal. Before working for Microids, Sokal created the Inspector Canardo comic, which featured an anthropomorphic and alcoholic duck who made his living as a private detective. Eventually, Sokal would find his way to working as a game developer for Microids, where he helped develop the first-person point-and-click adventure game, Amerzone – The Explorer’s Legacy, in 1999, which also recently received a remake.
Three years later, in May of 2002, Microids and Sokal would release Syberia, which also takes place in the same universe as Amerzone – The Explorer’s Legacy. The Amerzone itself gets mentioned a few times in Syberia. Syberia follows Kate Walker, a lawyer from New York City who was sent to the fictional town of Valadilène in France. Kate’s job is to help with the acquisition of a French automaton toy factory, but instead, she ends up going on a grand adventure where she learns to take charge of her own life.
It would also go on to garner some pretty good reviews with a score of 82 on Metacritic. Currently, Syberia sits at number 15 on Adventure Gamer’s top 100 Adventure Games List. In my opinion, it definitely deserves the spot it has.
Syberia And Its Sequels

Syberia went on to spawn three sequels, with Benoît Sokal writing and directing them. The first sequel, titled Syberia II, was released in 2004. It picks up almost directly after the ending of the first game. Afterwards, the franchise laid dormant for 13 years until Syberia III was released back in 2017. In 2022, the fourth game in the franchise, titled Syberia: The World Before, was released. Sadly, Benoît Sokal passed away in 2021 while serving as the game’s director.
While I haven’t had the pleasure of playing the third and fourth games, I think I’ll finally get to them after playing through Syberia Remastered. There isn’t a release date yet for the game or its VR counterpart. However, Microids has said in the announcement that both will be releasing at the same time in late 2025.
I’m personally hoping it releases in the autumn months. That way I will have a good excuse to stay inside and keep warm.
All titles in the Syberia franchise are available on PC through Steam. The Remaster is slated for release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
