Hey retro gamers! Come celebrate the forty-year history of one of the best and most popular games the world has ever known. Tetris® Forever is an interactive documentary loaded with over fifteen different Tetris games by Digital Eclipse, and it’s coming out later this year.

Tetris® Forever was revealed in August’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase and the Indie World Showcase, where it was described as an “interactive museum”. There will be over an hour and a half of documentary footage exploring the partnership between Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov and Henk Rogers, the founder of The Tetris Company. According to Digital Eclipse, the two will go in depth about the history of Tetris and their parts in it. Their story is of a creative partnership and gaming phenomenon that went on to change the face of video games. You won’t want to miss it!

Games Across the Ages

Tetris® Forever features a variety of different Tetris games. This includes the 1988 Famicom version of Tetris, Super Bombliss, Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss, Tetris Battle Gaiden, and Super Tetris 3 alongside documentary videos about their creation and development. Digital Eclipse says the game will even include a faithful recreation of the 1984 classic from the Soviet-era Electronika 60. On top of all of the old classics, Tetris® Forever will also have a brand new game – Tetris Time Warp. In Tetris Time Warp, the game jumps between gameplay styles from across the series’ many eras. It’s a good use of the assets made available through this project that remixes the entire Tetris experience. 

It Doesn’t End There

While Tetris® Forever will launch on all platforms, Nintendo Switch players are getting a little something extra. Also coming to Nintendo Switch Online is the NES version of Tetris, along with a Grand Prix event, Tetris 99. The NES version is best known as the competitive Tetris title, and the Tetris 99 event is a last-player-standing event. 99 players play Tetris at once and keep going until only one remains. It looks like the creators are looking to modernize the scene and expand their competitive gamer base, which can only be good for fans of the title.
