The Atmospheric Beauty of Oscuro Blossom’s Glow

In a world of giant bugs and magical plants, embark on a journey to track down a creature that is threatening the world. Oscuro Blossom’s Glow is a beautiful 2D puzzle platformer with a vivid atmosphere and soundscape. Developed by Hongoneon, you play as Selene, a girl seeking to heal the planetary system with her ability to wield light. The demo for Oscuro Blossom’s Glow takes the player through the first level, a short introduction to this unique world.

Saving the Light

Oscuro Blossom’s Glow is set on three planets formed from an ancient tree, each planet sustained by magical plants. These plants are powered by light, but in the game’s opening, the light is stolen by the Dark One (the Oscuro). Without the light, Selene’s planets will die. But the Oscuro will die without the light as well, leading Selene to a moral conundrum.

The Oscuro is not as sinister as he seems.

Regardless, Selene chases after the Dark One, journeying through a world of otherworldly nature to get to him. To unlock each area, Selene draws the light out of blossoms and uses it to progress through levels. As light affects nature in magical ways, this is a major aspect of Obscuro Blossom’s Glow’s gameplay. For example, when plants are newly filled with illumination, they will blossom into ladders that Selene climbs to reach new levels.

Puzzles and Friends

Each level is short and sweet, and there’s diversity in the types of puzzles to be solved. Some are basic platforming puzzles: jump on moving platforms, avoid objects that will kill you, etc. My favorite one (no spoilers) involved a little row of caterpillars that perform a precious and adorable dance. Meaning, they each take a turn lifting their heads up one at a time. Oh my gosh, it was so cute.

The caterpillers will dance for as long as you want.

Speaking of cute, this is a world populated by giant, beautiful bugs that serve to both help and hinder you. They guide you across impossible terrain and provide hints for puzzles. In the demo, the most unhelpful bug was a rolling insect that would not stop smacking into me, which kills Selene instantly. But, apart from that, all are friendly bugs.

An Immersive Experience

The reason I wanted to check out this demo was the developer’s emphasis on immersion. The soundscape is carefully designed to match the environment and tone, and just the snippet I experienced in the short demo was not quite like anything I’ve heard before. Riding the line between calming and mysterious, natural sounds and music combine to pull you into the scene.

The artwork itself is gorgeous. Each level is incredibly detailed from a visual standpoint, especially considering each planet is composed of the remnants of a giant tree. The visual experience is like a children’s picture book transformed into a game. Oscuro Blossom’s Glow is worth experiencing for the artwork alone.

Final Thoughts

It’s hard to tell what Oscuro Blossom’s Glow does differently from a 2D platforming perspective off of a 15-minute demo. Most puzzle games start off easy, so it makes sense that this preview’s levels would be straightforward. The puzzles were intuitive, and I got through each level before the puzzles got repetitive. Since I’m more of a puzzle lover than a platforming lover, I’m curious to see if the full game ups the complexity of the puzzles or leans more into the platformer aspect.

At the end of the day, I’m a sucker for immersion, and this game has the environmental experience down to a tee. Although it doesn’t have dialogue, the emotional aspect of the story is apparent through the animation. The entire quest is building towards Selene’s ultimate choice of the Oscuro’s fate. But the point of the game is Selene’s journey to get there. For the low-price tag, Oscuro Blossom’s Glow is worth investing in.

Oscuro Blossom’s Glow is available on Steam for $5.99. The demo for Oscuro Blossom’s Glow was reviewed for Wholesome Games Celebration, 2025.
