Indie games have the benefit of being able to fuse as many genres together as they want. So, if you’re a group like developer Death Kumiai and publisher Flashlight Games, who decides to blend anime-style visuals with a dark fantasy world and then wrap all that in deckbuilding and dungeon-crawling RPG mechanics, you have the ability to do just that. Thus, today, they announced that their title, Annihilated, will drop fully on Steam on July 22nd, and will even launch with a discount to further encourage you to get it.
“Players will dive into a twisted world where adorable fuses with dark horror art that presents a narrative-driven dungeon crawler RPG with 4 distinct character routes. Find your favorite “broken” party member to save…and leave the others behind.”
So, yeah, that’s dark. Don’t worry, though, the trailer is just as dark:
Yep, and things only get wilder as you delve deeper into the dungeon and learn more about the fallen hero’s party, and how you have to borrow the powers of those who were lost to try and survive.
“Two major pillars shape Annihilated: the imaginative negative space offered by retro vintage games, and the complex, conflicted character writing found in text adventure games, light novels, and JRPGs circa 2010, also influences from older and recent classics as Fire Emblem, Super Mario RPG, Undertale or The Legend of Zelda. Our goal is to craft a whimsical cartoon-style game grounded in authentic human nature and weighty thematic depth.” – Sabotenshi (Lead Artist & Lead Writer)
So, will you take up the challenge and see the story to the end? You have a month to decide before Annilhilated arrives on Steam…
