Celestial Return Devlog 3 Unpacks Chaotic Soundtrack

A game’s music is one of the most memorable aspects of it (it’s playing basically the whole time, after all). And while most games stick to one or two genres, Metaphor Games and Shoreline Games’s noir sci-fi RPG Celestial Return provides a veritable smorgasbord of music. While the first two devlogs delved into the neon depths of the setting, the third devlog details the blend of genres that defines the game’s music:

Celestial Return‘s 20-track soundtrack blends jazz, metal, and electronic music to provide the perfect background for the sprawling story players will experience. The game does not bend to one musical identity, it does not fit neatly into any given box; instead leaning into an intentionally fragmented sound that parallels the story beat for beat.”

But the team isn’t just interested in making good music. The soundtrack, in all its mashed-up glory, reflects the eclectic nature of Celestial Return‘s storytelling and protagonist:

“The soundtrack created is not clean or uniform, but neither is Detective Howard, or the city he calls home. An individual shaped by circumstances beyond his control, and thrown into the jaws of a monster he can only hope to survive, Howard is a creature born from a collection of unfinished parts hastily pulled together, none of them quite fitting the whole, but somehow coming together to be something more.”
