A little while back, we talked about the Hungarian label known as HEJ Collective, which was going to release “seasons” of indie games so that more titles could be released into the world. The “first season” of the Collective is starting to roll out, with the second game being Grapple Bear. Now, despite the name, the game isn’t about fighting; rather, it is a platformer mixed with arcade-style mechanics and is even a racing game, technically. Confused? Don’t worry, we have things below for you to see/hear what the game is like:
“A mama bear searching for her lost cub. A grapple hook is her only way forward.
Grapple Bear is a precision platformer where your grappling hook is your only tool to move. Swing, launch, and cling your way through over 40 handcrafted levels as a determined mama bear searching for her lost cub. What starts as a simple journey quickly becomes a test of precision and survival as increasingly dangerous obstacles stand in your way.”
There’s more nuance to Grapple Bear than that, though. Even when you find the “perfect route,” you can go back and replay it to see if you can “speed things up” and get a better time. Other features in the game include:
- Grapple-only movement: no jumping, no running, just the hook
- 40+ handcrafted levels across a variety of dangerous environments
- Global leaderboards
- Weekly procedurally generated challenge levels with their own leaderboards
- Completely hand-drawn art style, no AI artwork
- Easy to learn, brutal to master
