Video games are often expected to get “fantastical,” or to “simulate” the real world in certain ways to allow us to do things we wouldn’t usually do. However, the gaming space can also get pretty “meta” with things, should the developers desire. In the case of Nested Loop Studios and publisher Pantaloon, they made a game that’s all about creating a space for your digital Steam library. Yes. Really. It’s called BOXROOM, and it’s on Steam Early Access right now. In fact, the game just got a big update for the Early Access version, and as you’ll see below, things have gotten both modern and expansive:
“In this corner right here you’ll find our shiny new Modern Catalogue filled with all the items minimalist interior designers
dream of: warm wooden colours on furniture and single-colour fabrics. If that’s not your thing, we also have all the new gaming peripherals! Whether it’s curved monitors, modern PC rigs or controllers, RGB lighting, headsets, microphones or even streaming decks – it’s all here ready for you to build your dream game setup! But that’s not all! BOXROOM is no longer just a home for your games but now also your music! Yes! You can now display your
digital music library as CDs in the game. Just find the folder on your PC with your albums and import them. Add your custom
artwork and even listen to your tunes on the in-game radios! Time to bring back “Summer Mix 2003” and “These songs made me think of you” – or just display all the indies you support through Bandcamp in a really cool way!”
In addition to all of that, there is now full modding support for the game via its catalog, and there are more “partner items” for you to use to decorate your space! If you want to try it out, you can get the Early Access version on Steam, or download it via Itch.io.
