How big can you make a gaming franchise? Well, as big as you want to make it, honestly. The only limit is a team’s imagination, ability, and how much money they have on them at the time. In the case of RuneScape, the team at Jagex doesn’t have money issues, as the franchise remains one of the most popular in the gaming space, especially with its MMOs. Plus, they expanded in 2026 to cover other genres, too. Over the weekend, RuneFest 2026 took place, and at it, they announced a new, unnamed MMO project that would enhance the franchise even more. Here are the first details for it:
“Currently in the early stages of development, the as-yet-unnamed title will bring the world of Gielinor to life in Unreal Engine, combining the depth, freedom and community-led spirit that have defined RuneScape for 25 years with the technology and game design possibilities of today.”
Obviously, that’s not a lot to go on, but it doesn’t have to be much. After all, the Jagex team has shown that they know how to make games. Granted, this could be another case of going “too big” for what the franchise needs, but that will only be determined when/if the title launches. Here are some of the other big announcements at RuneFest, in case you missed them:
- Beyond the games: Jagex reveals work has started on a new RuneScape animated adaptation, bringing Gielinor to new formats and audiences, in partnership with Charlie White, aka MoistCr1TiKaL and Lyrical Media.
- 25 years in the making, RuneScape Reignited launches December 2, offering the ultimate RuneScape experience alongside the biggest roadmap in the game’s history.
- Old School RuneScape unveils its most packed roadmap to date. The Golden Gates to Menaphos are opening finally after 20 years, alongside a suite of fan-demanded content, keeping the emphasis on being the MMO driven by its community.
- RuneScape: Dragonwilds unveils the Blood Crystal Saga and update plans for 2027
Clearly, RuneFest 2026 had a lot to offer fans, and it’ll be interesting to see how things develop over the next year or so.
