Gamescom 2026 Announces Special Dev Keynote and Dev Awards

For certain video game events, such as the upcoming Gamescom 2026, some people might think they’re “solely for gamers” to get new insights into key upcoming titles and watch certain presentations. However, there is a game dev side to things, and at the upcoming 2026 show, as revealed by an official press release, developers will have even more to check out if they get to go to Cologne, Germany.

First, there’s a new keynote address happening:

Anthony Gallegos, Creative Director at UnknownWorlds, will deliver the conference’s second keynote, ”The Perils and Freedom of Making a Sequel to ‘Subnautica‘”.

Drawing on his experience leading the development of Subnautica 2, Gallegos will explore one of game development’s most familiar creative challenges: how to evolve a beloved franchise while preserving the qualities that made players fall in love with it. His keynote will offer insights into sequel development, creative risk-taking, player expectations, and the balance between innovation and familiarity.

Given the very turbulent nature of how this particular game has come to pass, and almost not pass, it’ll be interesting to hear what he has to say.

Then, there are the Dev Awards that will be done during the event:

“On Monday afternoon (August 24, Main Stage), the gamescom dev awards will recognize outstanding creativity, innovation, and talent showcased at this year’s gamescom dev indie expo while also honoring exceptional contributions to the games industry through two speaker-selected awards.”

The categories for the event include:

  • Visual Excellence Award
  • Most Innovative Game (powered by Epic Games)
  • Most Promising Game
  • Best Sound Design
  • Ambassador of the Year (Speakers’ Choice)
  • Excellence in Game Design (Speakers’ Choice)

With all that being had, and more, you can for sure bet that Gamescom 2026 will be a must-attend event for many in the industry.
